Playboy's Sexiest Celebrity Covers: Dita, Raquel, Madonna, Oh My

Thursday, November 27, 2008

Burlesque star Dita Von Teese is baring it all for the December issue of German playboy.

Posing in stockings and suspenders, as well as PVC boots, the star certainly lives up to her sex symbol status.

But Von Teese's cover is just one in a long list of stars that have graced the famous men's magazine. And if anyone knows a thing or two about sexy stars, it's Hugh Hefner!

Many of his girls have gone on to fame and fortune after gracing the cover of his magazine. And conversely, some of Hollywood's biggest stars have boosted Playboy's sales with alluring, enticing cover shots. There are even those celebrities who are so rich and famous that only minimal skin was required to join the party.

Here's our list of our favorite celebrity cover models over the years. Sexy or not, here they come.

Love was ageless and evergreen for Babs in 1977: "A Star Is Born" earned her an Oscar, a Golden Globe, numerous Grammys, a Barbara Walters interview, and a Playboy cover. Her pose was mildly alluring, but we're guessing the inside photo spread of a nude Nureyev with Michelle Phillips was a little more Hef's speed.

9. Madonna, September 1985

The cover might not be anything to make the Material Girl blush, but the nude pics inside brought Madonna to court. Seems the photographer who she posed for before she was the Queen of Pop sold the photos to Playboy and Penthouse. Madonna had not consented

What she did eventually consent to was the huge amount of free publicity that helped propel her to superstardom.

8. Sally Field, March 1986

Mention the name Sally Field and sexpot is not necessarily the first word that comes to mind (think Gidget, The Flying Nun, Brothers & Sisters). But back in the day, Sally had it going on.

In 1986 she was between films, but she got a little career boost, Hef-style, with her cover pose in bunny tail, fishnets, and all.

7. Burt Reynolds, October 1979

Burt has been on the cover of Playboy only once, fully clothed. But from 1973 to 1983 he was featured seven times in Playboy's famous annual "Sex Stars" pictorials. Still, probably his best-known spread isn't in Playboy at all; it's that unforgettable Cosmo shot on the bearskin rug.

6. Joan Collins, December 1983

Joan was 49 when she posed for a 12-page pictorial and the cover of Playboy. That same year she starred in a made-for-TV movie called Making of a Male Model, in which she seduces a young man half her age. At the time she was often called "The World's #1 Sex Symbol."

Today we'd just call her a cougar.

5. Farrah Fawcett, December 1978

It's probably not as well known or as scintillating as her famous bathing suit poster, but we're sure this cover was the favorite of many a teenage boy when it appeared in '78. Still, despite the sexy cover, Farrah refused to pose nude for the pages of the magazine at least until 1995. That issue became the best-selling one of the '90s, selling four million copies.

4. Dolly Parton, October 1978

Here she comes again, and here we go. Dolly graced Playboy in full bunny attire: tail, ears, and double-Ds. That same year she won a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. We're thinking the provocative cover boosted her career more than the award did.

3. Sharon Stone, July 1990

Until 1990 Sharon Stone was not a household name. But after "Total Recall" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and a cover and nude photo spread in Playboy, Sharon was off and running to major Hollywood stardom. But was it her acting prowess or the buff bod from all those hours in the gym that did the trick? Since Playboy listed her in the "Top 25 All-Time Sexiest Stars of the Decade," we're guessing the latter.

2. Ann-Margret, October 1983

The same year that Ann-Margret made a TV movie playing a dying mother of ten children, she posed for her Playboy cover. Now there's two ends of the spectrum for you. She won the Emmy for Who Will Love My Children?, and we're guessing she won a few hearts for this cover.

1. Raquel Welch, December 1979

Welch's career might have been waning in 1979 (her career highlight that year? A two-part guest appearance on Mork and Mindy), but her sex appeal was still at an all-time high. The cover headline read, "A Celebration of the Decade's Most Desired Women."

Raquel definitely tops our list

Brooke Burke is ABC's 'Dancing' Queen

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

LOS ANGELES — Brooke Burke waltzed away with the mirror ball trophy on the "Dancing with the Stars" finale.

The 37-year-old TV personality and mother of four dominated the seventh season of the popular ABC dancing competition and bested former NFL player Warren Sapp and former 'NSync member Lance Bass during the Tuesday night finale, in which she reprised an emotional Viennese waltz routine that earned her a perfect score from the show's panel of judges.

"Unbelievable," was all Burke could muster after winning amid a flurry a confetti.

From the outset, the slinky former host of E!'s "Wild On" and CBS' "Rock Star" commanded the ballroom this season, coming in first place eight out of 10 times and receiving a 10 — the judges' top score — 16 times. Burke was crowned the latest "Dancing with the Stars" champion after the judges' scores — 88 out of 90 — were combined with viewers' votes.

"I actually can't believe it," said Derek Hough, Burke's professional partner, who's never won the competition. "I really can't. I honestly can't. The journey's been so long. It's been tough. It's been wonderful. It's been everything I could ever hope for. Wow. I can't believe we actually did it, girl."

Burke maintained an eight point lead over Sapp, the charismatic 35-year-old fan favorite whose technique was consistently criticized by the judges. Sapp still managed to hustle his way into second place with professional partner Kym Johnson, despite receiving one point less from the judges than the third place finisher, 29-year-old singer Bass.

"From the moment you start, you make me smile," head judge Len Goodman told Sapp.

Bass and his professional partner, Lacey Schwimmer, were upbeat about their loss. The pair danced away after their dismissal. And he's not hanging up his dancing shoes just yet. The former boybander will join professional dancers and other former contestants for the 38-city "Dancing with the Stars" tour, which is set to kick off Dec. 17 in San Diego.

"You never took the safe road once," judge Carrie Ann Inaba told Bass during the finale.

Previously dismissed celebrities — actor Cody Linley; sprinter Maurice Greene; actresses Susan Lucci and Cloris Leachman; chef Rocco DiSpirito; reality TV star Kim Kardashian; actor Ted McGinley; and comedian Jeffrey Ross — also returned for a last dance. Injured volleyball player Misty May-Treanor and singer Toni Braxton remained off their feet.

Tom Cruise Admits Regret for Antics on 'Oprah'

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Tom Cruise admits the fallout from his infamous sofa-leaping antics on Oprah Winfrey's TV show greatly “affected” his family.

The Top Gun star regrets proclaiming his love for now-wife Katie Holmes in such hyperactive fashion, but can’t understand why he was critically mauled for it.

Click here to see photos of Tom Cruise.

Tom went on the chat queen’s show in 2005, and spent much of the interview jumping on the guest sofa, telling the world of his love for a “magnificent” woman.

He told the U.K.'s Hello! Magazine: “I guess I did court her kind of aggressively."

“There were things I did at the time that I look back and think, ‘Well, okay, I could have handled a couple of moments better.’"

“But I was surprised by some of the things that were said about me at the time."

“It affected us all, and as a father and a husband you want to protect your family.”

Tom insisted he’s learned from his mistakes, but he’ll never stop shouting from the rooftops his adoration for Katie, their daughter Suri and his adopted kids with Nicole Kidman.

Nicollette Sheridan Rebounds with David Spade

Allie @ Gone Hollywood | Nicollette Sheridan had a special guest at her party to ring in turning 45 – a possible new beau in David Spade.

Celebrating her birthday at new L.A. hot spot Luau with Desperate Housewives costars Felicity Huffman, onscreen husband Neal McDonough and Kyle MacLachlan, the newly single Sheridan at first played it coy with her man of the evening.

“They arrived separately and even started dinner at different booths,” says an onlooker. It was a familiar scene: The duo were spotted a couple of weeks ago at the restaurant’s opening, where they spent the night in deep conversation. This time, though, things got a little more intimate.

“They cuddled and kissed,” says an onlooker. “They were full-on making out in a booth.”

Decked out in a sequined gold frock, the birthday girl sipped on lychee martinis throughout the night and giddily enjoyed a specialty cake that read “Happy Birthday Princessa.”

While a source insists the two aren’t dating, the onlooker said that “David winked at her and stood by her side while she blew out the candles on her cake.”

Chris Brown, Kanye West Sweep American Music Awards

Monday, November 24, 2008

LOS ANGELES — Chris Brown was the big winner, but it was Kanye West's night at the American Music Awards.

Instead of his typical tantrum — a trend West started four years ago when he lost the favorite new artist prize — the rapper claimed two trophies Sunday and called on his colleagues to up their game.

"It's our responsibility as musicians to keep pushing each other," West said. "We will be the new Beatles, the new (Jimi) Hendrix. I want to be Elvis."

West was named favorite male rap/hip-hop artist and his CD, "Graduation," won favorite rap/hip-hop album.

Brown took the night's top honors — artist of the year — as well as favorite male artist in both the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories.

"I was shocked," the 19-year-old crooner said backstage. "I'm so thankful and grateful. I thought Coldplay should have won the award, but I'll take it."

Brown's gal pal, Rihanna — who wore chains and a leather corset to perform her love ballad, "Rehab" — was named favorite female artist in both the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories. Alicia Keys was another double winner: Her CD, "As I Am," was both pop/rock and soul/R&B album winner.

The American Music Awards traditionally centers on its performances, and Sunday was no exception. The show featured high-energy sets from Miley Cyrus, Ne-Yo and Beyonce, though a pair of lackluster medleys opened the program at the Nokia Theatre. Christina Aguilera channeled Madonna and the New Kids on the Block channeled an earlier version of themselves as each sang their latest singles and greatest hits.

Pink's new track, "Sober," was awkwardly introduced by slurring rocker Scott Weiland, formerly of the Stone Temple Pilots. Also performing were The Jonas Brothers, the Pussycat Dolls, Coldplay and Annie Lennox, who won the Award of Merit.

"I never thought I would live to see the day that I could be 53 years old standing on a stage," Lennox said as she accepted the trophy from Justin Timberlake. "It's been an incredible journey. Music: my friend, my accompaniment through life."

Other winners included Brad Paisley for favorite country artist, Taylor Swift for favorite female country act, and Rascal Flatts for favorite country favorite band, duo or group.

"I didn't really think that I had a chance at winning," Swift confessed backstage. "I thought, yes, it's good to be nominated, but I honestly didn't think I was going to win this award. I can't believe that I did. I can't believe that the fans did that for me. Everybody on MySpace, they're the reason I am holding this award right now."

Fans chose the night's winners through online votes.

Iowa College Bases Musical on Bible's 'Terror' Stories

Saturday, November 22, 2008

DES MOINES, Iowa — Don't expect to hear these Bible stories at church.

Cannibalism, rape, a bear that mauls children — this is the Bible?

They're among six stories from the Old Testament acted out in "Terror Texts," a musical at Northwestern College in Orange City.

Adding to the shocking nature of the stories are the theatrics, with actors decked out in Goth attire, a rock band and a mosh pit.

Theater professor Jeff Barker said the obscurity of the stories belies their value.

"We believe we have discovered something that has been lying dormant for many, many centuries," said Barker, who created and directs "Terror Texts."

The musical was first performed at the 1,200 student Christian college in northwest Iowa in February and came back for an encore this fall, with a last performance slated for this weekend.

Barker uses the King James version of the Bible, and actors speak each verse word-by-word. It is not an interpretation or adaptation, like "Godspell" or "Jesus Christ Superstar."

"There's tremendous power waiting when you simply speak and act these stories aloud with faithfulness to the text, not trying to adapt them or add a lot of bits, but just simply play what's written there," Barker said.

Barker views the Bible as a "repository of ancient plays," and when performed they can be seen in a whole new light — even the dark stories.

"I was looking for terror text, stories I can say are thematically tied together because they are frightening and mysterious and terrifying," Barker said. "That's part of what we're saying with this whole project that life and God himself are mysteries."

William Dyrness, a professor of theology and culture at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif., specializes in visual arts in relation to religious tradition.

He said biblical scholars have proposed that much of the Old Testament is poetry and was designed to be sung, especially in the temple as part of worship.

"It's not far from that to think of it as a play," he said. "Theologians have argued the best way to understand the Bible is in terms of it being a great dramatic performance."

He called "Terror Text" a creative variation of that idea.

"This is obviously a very Protestant approach where you're attempting to understand this story so that you can see the way the Bible applies to your life," he said. "You carry it on in your life. You become part of the story."

Student Hannah McBride has several roles in the performance, including as a virgin who gets kidnapped at the end of a story of rape, murder and war. McBride said it has shown her something about herself.

"This particular project has affected the way I view negative emotions — grief, anger, bitterness and spite and hate. We are meant to be emotional people. The Bible in a lot of ways shows us that that's OK," she said. "We need to embrace that we're going to be very, very sad and we won't know what to do with that."

In her role as a virgin, McBride wears a wedding dress that has been destroyed. She describes her look as a "corpse bride."

"It has that image of what could have been great, I ruined," she said.

In a world in which religion often is practiced privately or individually, Barker said he hopes people will understand the Bible better through his performance.

"These mysterious, dark stories of the Old Testament, they bring us face-to-face with the suffering of the world," Barker said. "It says we are capable of great evil and we must not forget these stories and we have some serious things to be accountable for in our own lives as a group and individually."

40 Years Later Vatican Forgives John Lennon for Jesus Comment

Saturday, November 22, 2008

BUFFALO, N.Y. — John Lennon was forgiven by the Vatican for his 1966 comment that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, Reuters reported.

"The remark by John Lennon, which triggered deep indignation mainly in the United States, after many years sounds only like a 'boast' by a young working-class Englishman faced with unexpected success, after growing up in the legend of Elvis and rock and roll," Vatican daily Osservatore Romano said.

After Lennon made the comment to a London newspaper, some Christians in the United Stated became infuriated, and burned the Beatles' records in huge gatherings.

The Vatican newspaper article forgiving Lennon went on to praise the Beatles.

The fact remains that 38 years after breaking up, the songs of the Lennon-McCartney brand have shown an extraordinary resistance to the passage of time, becoming a source of inspiration for more than one generation of pop musicians," it said, according to Reuters.

Cate Blanchett Reveals Secret to Happy Marriage in the Bedroom

Saturday, November 22, 2008

Cate Blanchett says "spooning" in bed is the secret to a happy marriage.

The Oscar-winning actress, who has three sons with husband Andrew Upton, told Oprah Winfrey: "Someone once said to me, and I think it's quite true, that if your bodies actually fit together when you're sleeping in bed — I'm not going to get into too much detail — you're in good stead.

"When you can spoon with someone, then you're OK. Because you might not vote the same way, you might not have the same politics, but sometimes that works for people."

Blanchett and playwright husband Andrew Upton have three sons: Dashiell, 6, Roman, 3, and Ignatius, who was born in April.

The Academy Award-winning actress appeared with Harrison Ford in the movie "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," which was a summer hit.

Guns N' Beatles: Axl Rose and Paul McCartney Storm MySpace

Thursday, November 20, 2008

When Axl Rose and Paul McCartney started their careers, music was released primarily on vinyl albums, and lines of fans snaked for blocks from the front doors of record stores when the latest Beatles and Guns N' Roses albums were released.

Things are different now.

Both the ex-Beatle and the current Guns N' Roses frontman (with a completely new backing band) are releasing their latest music on the online social network MySpace. McCartney is debuting "Electric Arguments" with his side group The Fireman, and Guns N' Roses is finally releasing "Chinese Democracy," seventeen years in the making.

MySpace members will be able to listen to the new songs, but won't be able to download them. Geffen Records will release "Chinese Democracy" on November 23 at Best Buy stores. "Electric Arguments" is due in stores, and onMySpace Music, on November 25.

The title track of "Chinese Democracy" debuted this week at No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Is Prince William Behind Paris Hilton's Split With Benji Madden?

Thursday, November 20, 2008

LOS ANGELES — After nine months together, it looks like Paris Hilton has split from the man she once declared as the love of her life, Benji Madden.

The hotel heiress hasn’t been seen with the "Good Charlotte" rocker for over a week, and both have been hitting up Hollywood hotspots separately, sparking speculation that they’d entered splitsville. A source close to the couple told Tarts that the star-studded duo is pretty much kaput.

Reps for the couple did not respond to a request for comment.

So went wrong between the joined-at-the-lip twosome? It seems that Hilton and Madden recently sealed a rumored six-figure deal to swing by Australia on New Year's Eve to attend the launch party for a new social online networking system, Bongo Virus. Paris is booked to be the host of the bash, while Benji is set to do the spinning.

According to an insider associated with the Australian company, Prince William may have had plans to meet up with Paris to ring in the New Year, having spent quite some time with her while she's been filming her "My BFF" show in London.

"For security reasons, he won't confirm his attendance until just before, but we're told he is pretty keen to meet up with Paris," said the source.

Bongo Virus confirmed that Prince William had been invited to the New Year's Eve bash, but declined further comment. A rep for the Royal Family could not be reached.

"We aren't that worried if Benji and Paris don't want to come together," said our insider. "But we know Paris will definitely be there, and we can't wait."

So did Prince William's extra attention irk Benji? According to an inside source, the ultra-quiet Benji can be well, kind of controlling, which apparently played a significant role in his split from former fiancée Sophie Monk. And given Paris’s perennial partying lifestyle and love of the nightlife, things just weren’t smooth sailing.

Another source tells Tarts that Nicole Richie never really approved of her childhood friend dating her fiance's twin brother which may have added some strain to the relationship, although Richie previously denied that she had a problem with the relationship.

But it doesn't sound as though Hilton is letting any ofthis get her down. Pop Tarts spotted the 27-year-old partying well into the wee hours of Wednesday morning at West Hollywood hotspot Apple, where she laughed and joked with galpals and went wild dancing on the couches.

Nikki Reed No Longer Embarrassed to Represent America, and Other GQ Party Tidbits

So what tidbits did Pop Tarts hear while hanging out at the GQ "Men of the Year" party in West Hollywood on Tuesday night? Well for starters, we found out what Nikki Reed’s wardrobe will be when she heads off to Europe on Monday to promote "Twilight."

"It’s been difficult being an actress and going to other countries and representing your country and just being embarrassed, embarrassed all the time," the 20-year-old said in regards to her not-so stimulated American Pride prior to Obama’s election. "But now I’m leaving for Europe on Monday to do press for "Twilight" and I’m wearing a big Obama sticker on my back."

Speaking of making movies, Aaron Eckhart just wrapped filming the chick-flick "Traveling" alongside Jennifer Aniston and seemed to be very smitten by the former "Friend."

"Jennifer is a peach, she’s such a wonderful amazing woman to work with," Eckhart gushed. "Her reputation is well justified." As for English heartthrob Jason Statham, his motivation for coming out to party was pretty simple.

"The free beer."

Olga Kurylenko Won't Even Kiss on First Dates

She’s heating up movie theaters in her role in the latest James Bond installment "Quantum of Solace," but it doesn’t sound as though Olga Kurylenko has all that much fun disrobing in front of the cameras.

"You have to block it out. I don’t like taking of my clothes and running around naked," the Ukrainian actress told the December issue of Maxim magazine, adding that filming was also pretty uncomfortable in a bumps and bruises kinda way.

"I got hurt because I was almost doing it for real (the stunts), like when you see me get thrown to the floor, I’m actually smashing onto the floor," she said. "In the movie it’s one second, but we do it for half a day, so you’re falling again and again and again."

(Olga also told Tarts that her Bond training regime involved four hours of intense training everyday for a good six months. Yikes.)

And for any men fortunate enough to take Kurylenko out in the town, just a word of warning she never has (and never will) kiss on the first date, and falls for what lies beneath the surface…

"To me sexiness comes from the inside. It’s what a man says, his movements, how he behaves, and it’s all about these little things," the 29-year-old told the men’s mag. "Sexiness comes through the eyes. I can’t really explain it. It’s a feeling, a connection."

Brooke Burke: DWTS Making Her Pig Out!

Brooke Burke looks mighty fine as she enters the final stages of "Dancing With the Stars," but unlike most contestants, the 37-year-old Burke was determined not to lose any more pounds off her already pin-thin physique.

"In every way, like there’s nothing like dancing. It’s crazy; everybody goes through various transformations on the show. I’m actually eating more because I don’t want to lose any weight," Burke told Tarts over the weekend. "But dancing eight hours a day there’s just nothing that can compare to it. It’s crazy, crazy."

Speaking of crazy, Burke thinks the show has sent her well, a little mad.

"Every week I ask myself how am I getting through it. It’s crazy, its seven days a week and it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done," she added. "It’s stressful and it’s been a really tough season just physically and mentally and I’m going to miss it a lot. It’s almost over."

Is Lindsay Going Back to Boys?

Friday, November 21, 2008

Lindsay Lohan is a handful.

That seems to be the realization Samantha Ronson is coming to, according to the New York Post. A source tells the paper the two are "fighting like cats and dogs" and seeing a couple's counselor to figure out how to get a handle on their relationship.

And this is one relationship that anyone would have a hard time getting a handle on.

Click for photos of Lindsay Lohan.

Lindsay recently insisted to Vogue magazine that she was not a lesbian, but was indeed in love with Samantha, who is a woman.

There have also been reports of her flirting with Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford and ex-boyfriend Calum Best. And it may be getting to Sam.

"Sam and Lindsay are still very much together and very much in love, but drama just seems to follow Lindsay, and Sam hates it," a source tells the Post. "She deals with Lindsay every day. And every day for Sam means questioning, 'Is this worth it?' "Lohan's rep said she was unaware of any therapy sessions.

Rosie Will Get the Last Laugh

Rosie Will Get the Last Laugh | Sting, Costello, but No Fat Lady | Brangelina Ban at People?

Rosie Will Get the Last Laugh

It’s Rosie O’Donnell vs. Barbara Walters, and sorry: Rosie will get the last laugh.

O’Donnell is set to take TV by storm next Wednesday when she debuts her "Rosie Live" show on NBC at 8pm. The live variety show — which will undoubtedly get a lot of press and viewers — is a try-out for Rosie’s planned weekly "Ed Sullivan"-like show that should start by February.

But yesterday Barbara Walters, the ancient mariner of "The View," didn’t like it when Rosie spoke about her rollercoaster year on the show. Rosie’s been responding to questions about the show while doing publicity for 'Live' show. She told reporters that there isn’t a lot of camaraderie on "The View" among the co-hosts. No kidding.

Barbara’s slick answer? She took two of the co-hosts — Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg — to dinner Wednesday night at Le Cirque. It might be the first time the three of them have been seen in public together not at an ABC event ever. Of course it was an event—a well staged one in fact considering the backstage bickering at that show that has had nothing to do with O’Donnell.

In fact, the noted absence of dopey Elizabeth Hasselbeck and loose lipped Sherri Shepherd from the Le Cirque gathering spoke volumes. Hasselbeck, a former reality TV star who’s been very lucky, fought with Walters and the others for months leading up to the recent presidential election. Shepherd has long been rumored to be on the chopping block at the show.

In fact: O’Donnell — Goldberg (whom I love) notwithstanding — brought more life to the turgid, fawning "View" in her one year than ABC could ever have hoped for. The network offered her $10 million to stay, but wanted a three year commitment. O’Donnell was wise enough to cut her losses and get out when the going was good.

"Rosie Live" should be an enormous hit if O’Donnell can keep the show tightly rehearsed and scripted, family friendly and most of all, positive in its celebration of Broadway, New York, and the arts. That isn’t to say that we won’t see the "other" Rosie — the cutting edge one. But "Rosie Live" is going to be about comedy, something she excels at.

Sting, Costello, but No Fat Lady

What do you after wrapping up the biggest rock tour of the last two years? After all in August Sting finished the grueling 18 month worldwide reunion of The Police that grossed way over $300 million. This week it spawned the bestselling concert video as well.

Most rock stars would just go home and relax. Not Sting. Last night at the landmark Theatre du Chatelet in Paris he opened in an opera — yes, an opera, a real opera — written by Elvis Costello’s long time musical director Stevie Nieve and his wife Muriel Teodori, and co-starring Costello and the eldest Sting progeny, Fiction Plane leader Joe Sumner.

Among the aficionados who turned out for the occasion: British pop legend Marianne Faithful, and film directors Mike Figgis and JP Davidson. Mrs. Sting — Trudie Styler — was front and center, as well, with actress daughter Mickey and newly minted best selling writer from the UK Simon Astaire ("Private Privilege").

It was quite an occasion too as Sting had only on the night before performed a showcase of music on the lute in the very same theater, playing selections from his album, Songs from the Labyrinth. He heads out next week to showcase this material on a tour of Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and other far flung locales.

Like I said, he could have just gone home.

But the opera, called "Welcome to the Voice," has been percolating for some time since Nieve and Teodori began workshopping it more than eight years ago. It was only when Costello and his band decided to join The Police on tour this year that the idea hatched for Sting to participate in the recording of Welcome to the Voice (already out on CD) but to put on a professionally staged version of it here.

The lead role of Dionysos could not be more perfect for Sting, who hasn’t acted in legit theater since his successful turn in "The Threepenny Opera" on Broadway nearly two decades ago. Dionysos is a romantic lead, a Greek steel worker who falls in love with opera and dreams of being with three of its leading ladies: Carmen, Madama Butterfly, and Norma. Eventually he finds a real diva named Lily who entrances him just as much. The role, as defined by Sting incorporates not only his ever-expanding vocal range — impressive in a non rock setting — but his matinee idol good looks and athleticism.

Figgis, who directed Sting long ago in the cult movie, "Stormy Monday," was visibly impressed (as was the audience, which gave the opening night cast a ten minute ovation). "Did I know back then that he could do this? The answer is Yes!"

Costello plays the local police commissioner, a comic character. Joe Sumner, Sting’s eldest son, is his friend and enthusiast. In his black Russian hat and heavy greatcoat Costello looked like he was having a lot of fun up on stage even though he told me later he was battling a grippy flu. Sumner — whose voice is often compared favorably to his dad’s—turns out to be a natural leading man on stage, a possible find for Broadway producers looking to cast their next rock musical.

But it was the women of "Welcome to the Voice" who really set the Theatre du Chatelet on fire. The gorgeous throated, sexy divas who played the "ghosts" of Dionysos’s fevered fantasy were Marie-Ange Todorovitch as the "ghost" of Carmen, Sonya Yoncheva as Butterfly, and Anna Gabler as Norma. The magnificent Spanish singer Sylvia Schwartz won over not just a few hearts as Lily, Dionysos’s "real" object of obsession.

We’ve come a long way since days of songs like "Roxanne" and "Alison," of narrow neck ties, and thundering power pop. And even though Sting and Costello can do that any time they want, and make millions to be sure, that’s what makes "Welcome to the Voice": that much more of an achievement.

These two multi talented musicians may represent the last generation of rockers able to stretch beyond their original genres and take on other forms with so much success. (Costello has also performed with the Brodsky Quartet and a variety of pop and classical singers.) Bravo to both of them!

‘Welcome to the Voice" continues in Paris through next week, all sold out to the top tiers of the Chatelet.

Brangelina Ban at People?

Great story in yesterday’s New York Times business section about People magazine and how Angelina Jolie has bought and sold them.

For the last couple of years, since the birth of baby Shiloh, People has figured out the easy way to deal with Jolie, Brad Pitt and their ever expanding brood: just pay them for pics and interviews, and agree to be nice in all other coverage. It’s not journalism but it is practical.

You almost can’t blame the couple for figuring this out, especially if People was a willing participant. And it’s worked. Reporter Brooks Barnes even missed a few incidents of "staged" pictures of Jolie and her kids in People, all exclusive and all set up in advance. In People, at least, she’s Mother Theresa, with all aspects of her prior life — partying, ex husbands, affairs, tattoos, blood in vials around the neck — expunged in favor of a humanitarian.

One thing Barnes missed: Jolie doesn’t even have a publicist. She doesn’t need one. She seems to have figured out that by selling her press rights she can control her image herself. If someone asks the wrong question, then move on.

Such was the case when baby Shiloh was born in Namibia. Offending journalists were simply expelled from the country at the Jolie-Pitts’ request. The couple appeared in a press conference with the country’s longtime leader, a well known violator of journalist’s rights. But it was to protect civil rights — the couple’s.

Not to say that Jolie and Pitt haven’t been generous. It was this column that broke the story that they’d placed $8 million in their tax free foundation and used it for humanitarian aid. Their hearts are definitely in the right place. But the road to hell, as many have learned, is paved with good intentions. The fact that the Times had to give People that comeuppance yesterday is proof enough of that.

'Bolt' Star John Travolta's Career Hiccups and Highlights

Friday, November 21, 2008

Celebrity careers are like heartbeats. Some move at a consistent rhythm, with strong steady beats. Some feel occasional palpitations: moments of blockbuster success. Then there are those random murmurs, beats that are neither strong nor weak, movies that are neither good nor bad, but show that a body — or career — still has a pulse.

But, sadly, every career seems to have its moment of flat-lining. Only a lucky few can be revived by the great defibrillators that swoop in and breathe life back into a dying career.

John Travolta is legendary for his near-career-death experiences. One of the sexiest men alive in the late 1970s, John soon after made some devastating career choices, packed on a few extra pounds, and suddenly was a has-been. Until Quentin Tarantino cast him in "Pulp Fiction," he seemed destined to a life of talking baby movies.

But could Quentin keep the original JT on track? His latest effort — providing the voice for a dog in the animated film "Bolt" that opens today — could get his career racing again. But Travolta has surprised us before. Check out the dizzying highs and devastating lows in our John Travolta Career EKG.

LOS ANGELES — Sounds crazy, but its true. Megan Fox was honored in style on Tuesday night as one of GQ Magazine's "Men of the Year" (and the only female) alongside Hollywood hotties including Leonardo DiCaprio, Aaron Eckhart and Jason Statham. So how did her real life beau Brian Austin-Green feel about his woman’s interesting accolade?

"She is one hell of a man, Megan Fox, he covers all of it. She’s honored for everything. She should be," the star of "Terminator: Sarah Conner Chronicles" told Tarts with a smile, adding that there was no hard feelings that he missed out on making the GQ cut. (Oh, and for the record, the original "90210" cast member hasn’t seen a single episode of the current remake and prefers just to well, "leave it alone.")

And despite reports that the romance between Green and Fox has been sliding ever since the "Transformers" sensation called off their engagement earlier this year, the two looked more than lovey-dovey than ever. The genetically-blessed duo strolled through the party (unable to keep their hands off each other) and hung out by the bar with "Mad Man" Jon Hamm.

But Green might want to keep his eye on GQ honoree and Disney divo, Zac Efron.

"Zac Efron is my obsession, we’re the same person," Fox told Tarts. "We’re not actually here, it’s like Janet and Michael. He just puts on his wig and a dress, and it’s me, and you don’t know that. It’s the greatest mystery of all time."

EVA LONGORIA'S SLIM SUPPORT

Eva Longoria's new slender figure is down to control underwear.

The actress admitted earlier this year she had piled on the pounds for her role in TV series "Desperate Housewives" but has recently been sporting a slimmer physique.

However, pictures from a recent party thrown in her honor by Allure magazine - to celebrate her appearance on their cover - revealed the actress was wearing smoothing garments Spanx.

At the Allure party - held at Eva's Los Angeles restaurant Beso - her "Desperate Housewives" co-star Felicity Huffman joked she would be keeping her friend away from alcohol.

Felicity laughed: "When Eva's not drunk, she is so good and talented. And I'm just hoping tonight we can keep her off the sauce."

"She's the most joyful, generous, industrious, down-to-earth person that I know, so if she invites me to the opening of a letter, I'll go."

Other guests at the party included Victoria Beckham, who took supermodel Heidi Klum as her "date" so their husbands could spend time together.

Victoria said: "She lives just down the road from me. David and Seal are friends and the kids play together."

VOIGHT HOPING TO MEET JOLIE'S TWINS

Jon Voight is hoping to meet Angelina Jolie's four-month-old twins this Thanksgiving.

The actor - who has a difficult relationship with his famous daughter, and has only recently started seeing her again after years of estrangement - would like to spend the holiday with his new grandchildren.

When asked what he was doing for Thanksgiving (Nov 27, 2008), Jon said: "The twins! Holy smokes... I'm hoping to meet them then, so we'll see!"

Speaking at the premiere of "24: Redemption" in New York last night (Nov 19, 2008), Jon also revealed he is thrilled Angelina - who raises six children with partner Brad Pitt - is so content with her life.

He added: "I think she's very happy. I saw her here before the twins came, and she was so happy. I've never seen her that happy."

"And she's got this beautiful film with Clint Eastwood out, so there's going to be a lot of energy around that one as well."

"I think it's wonderful that she loves kids. She always had this very unusual idea about family. I can't really attribute it to anyone."

BEYONCE LEARNS TO COOK FOR THANKSGIVING

Beyonce Knowles is learning to cook for Thanksgiving.
The "If I Was a Boy" singer, who is married to hip-hop star Jay-Z, hopes to improve her culinary skills in time to spend the holiday (November 27, 2008) with her family.

She said: "For Thanksgiving my mother usually cooks. It's just like anyone else's Thanksgiving."

"It's actually my favorite holiday because it's not about anything but giving back, giving thanks for all our blessings."

"Hopefully I'll try to make some type of pie. I'm not the best cook, but I think I'm ready to try something."

Beyonce, who supported Barack Obama in the US Presidential election race, also revealed she would love to sing at his inauguration ceremony in January.

The 27-year-old star added: "I know I'm definitely going to be there, I want to be there with him. I'm not sure if I'll be performing, but I'd love to."

Beyonce recently revealed she couldn't contain her emotions after Barack made history by becoming America's first elected black President.

She said: "I was ready to do whatever I had to do - volunteer or sing, I was ready."

"After he won, I fell asleep crying and smiling at the same time. I woke up with mascara running and a smile on my face!"

Barack has previously revealed he is a fan of Beyonce and her rapper spouse.

He said: "I have some Jay-Z and Beyonce on my iPod."

WINONA RYDER RUSHED TO HOSPITAL

Winona Ryder was rushed to hospital after a suspected overdose while on a flight to the UK yesterday (November 19, 2008).
The British Airways jet was forced to make a priority landing - 22 minutes before the expected time of arrival - and the "Edward Scissorhands" star reportedly had her stomach pumped at Hillingdon Hospital, West London.

Winona - who is thought to have a fear of flying - is believed to have accidentally taken too many Xanax pills, which are used to treat anxiety.

Her spokesman confirmed the 37-year-old star was fit to leave the hospital later that evening, saying: "She did fall ill on a flight and as a precautionary measure, was taken to a hospital."

"She was there maybe an hour and was released. The bottom line is she is in good health."

The Oscar-nominated actress collapsed twice on the 10-hour flight from Los Angeles before being escorted to hospital by British Airways staff, where she checked in under a fake name.

One passenger said: "She turned a deathly shade of pale. It was scary."

Another source added: "There was a massive commotion. Everyone on board was stunned and you could tell the cabin crew were worried."

Last night, Winona boarded a flight to another European city.

BRITNEY SPEARS' EDGY ALBUM

Britney Spears has promised her new album will keep fans on the ''edge of their seat.''
The singer - who releases LP "Circus" on her 27th birthday, December 2 - revealed her latest material is a return to her pop roots and will "engulf" anyone who hears it.

She said: "I can't wait to share it with my fans. I worked with producers from some of my earliest albums - I went old school."

"I called it 'Circus' because I like the fact that you are on the edge of your seat when you are at a circus. You are never bored."

"You are engulfed in what is going on and you want to know what is going to happen next."

Britney says "Circus" has a totally different sound to her previous album "Blackout," which she recorded when she was going through a "dark phase" in her life.

The "Womanizer" star explained: "They are two different vibes. 'Circus' is a lot lighter than 'Blackout' and has more pop in it."

"'Blackout' is darker, edgier and a little bit more urban. When I recorded 'Blackout' I was going through a really dark phase in my life and a lot of the songs reflect that."

"I didn't go on tour with that album so I will be bringing some of the songs from 'Blackout' on tour with me next year."

Britney also revealed her favorite song on the LP is the title track because it symbolizes her love of performing.

She added in a video interview on britneyspears.com: "The song 'Circus' is about me as an entertainer, about what I do and what I bring to a show is like a circus."

"I bring costumes and fun and theatrical things that leave people awed."

"I tell a story on stage and there won't be elephants in my show but it has the same elements as a circus."

HOLMES TO STAR IN MIU MIU'S AD CAMPAIGN

Katie Holmes is set to star in Miu Miu's new advertising campaign.
The 29-year-old actress - who has a two-year-old daughter Suri with husband Tom Cruise - will follow in the footsteps of Drew Barrymore, Kirsten Dunst and Lindsay Lohan by appearing in the adverts.

An insider said: "Katie is soon going to start shooting the photographs for the spring 2009 campaign."

"She will be posing alongside real models, who will be positioned as 'accessories' in the campaign."

"It's quite edgy and very different for Katie."

The "Batman Begins" star will be replacing Johnny Depp's partner Vanessa Paradis who is the current face of the fashion company.

Katie is no stranger to the fashion industry, and has worn a series of outfits she has designed herself to recent events.

Following Katie's appearance at the "Tropic Thunder" premiere earlier this year, where she wore a glamorous midnight blue dress complete with leather pleated bodice which she designed herself, reports emerged that she was planning to launch her own clothing line.

FOXX WANTS TO BE BOND

Friday, November 21, 2008
Jamie Foxx wants to be the first black James Bond.
The Oscar-winning actor would jump at the chance to portray the suave British spy.

He said: "Of course I'd take the role. I'd put a little swing in it. A little hip-hop, you know."

Foxx insists he would have no problem perfecting his British accent, and he wouldn't be afraid to suggest some changes for the role.

He said: "Maybe I wouldn't be drinking martinis, but drinking some Hennessey maybe. My Bond would drink dark liquor."

Foxx claims fans are keen to see him fulfill his dream, adding: "I was in London and I had to give an award to the current James Bond Daniel Craig."

"I went up and said, 'Bond. Black Bond.' And everybody just lost it. Black Bond would be cool."

The idea of having a black Bond was originally suggested by Craig.

He insisted it would be an exciting prospect following Barack Obama's success in the US Presidential election race earlier this month.

A recent survey revealed people would most like to see Will Smith, Djimon Hounsou or Terrence Howard become the first black James Bond.

A trial starts today in a battle between the classes -- the classes being the rich and the much richer.
The battleground is one of the most exclusive areas of Bev Hills, called Beverly Park, which is divided into Northern and Southern parts. The South Beverly Park Homeowners Association is suing the North BPHA -- the posher part where Barry Bonds, Rod Stewart, Sly Stallone and Denzel Washington reside -- because the hired help and others for the Southern masters have been blocked from entering on the North side.

Housekeepers and gardeners have been forced to take a seven-mile detour to enter on the South.

Report: Adam Shulman is a Loser

Filed under: Adam Shulman, Anne Hathaway
Just five months after splitting from her imprisoned ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri, Anne Hathaway's friends worried she's headed for more heartbreak.

Their reason for concern: rebounding. The 26-year-old Rachel Getting Married star revealed last month she's found love again with actor Adam Shulman.

Anne Hathaway has said of her relatively unknown new flame:

"You know when you don't know someone very well - you just meet them and you're like, 'Wow, you really have it going on'?"

But according to a source at the New York Post, the 27-year-old Adam Shulman could be the wrong man at the wrong time for the actress, adding:

"Adam is known as an opportunist. When he was attending Brown (University), he went after all the heiresses. It's like Anne is addicted to losers."

Ouch! At least the bar is set pretty low for him after Follieri's sentence for conspiracy and fraud. A spokesperson for Shulman declined comment.

Julianne Hough Says Goodbye to Dancing with the Stars

Dancing with the Stars just got a lot uglier.

Julianne Hough says this season - which ended Tuesday night when her and partner Cody Linley were eliminated from the competition - was likely her last.

"I won't be on Dancing this spring season. I don't know about the fall. Maybe, maybe not. We'll see," Hough wrote on her blog. "I'm definitely going to focus on the music. My first album was a learning experience, and I can't wait for the next one. I feel like the writing and producing will be even better, really awesome."

We know, guys. We were hoping she'd leave to focus on a career posing for Playboy, too.

Taco Bell: 50 Cent Can Eat It

Posted on November 20th, 2008 3:34 PM by Free Britney
Filed under: 50 Cent

Taco Bell is going for the whole enchilada in defending itself from a suit filed by 50 Cent, claiming the rapper's tough-talking $4 million lawsuit (alleging trademark infringement) from earlier this summer was nothing but a publicity stunt.

The fast food chain definitely answered the legal Bell, so to speak, in its attempt to straight up dome Fiddy when it comes to his credibility.

The Bell attacked 50 as a gentleman whose work "falls in the sub-genre of hip hop music known as 'gangsta rap,' a style associated with urban street gangs and characterized by violent, tough-talking braggadocio." Or something.

The Taco peeps also claim Fiddy only filed the lawsuit to "burnish his gangsta persona." Not sure how suing Taco Bell would do that, but whatever you say.

50 Cent sued over Taco Bell's promotional campaign where they offered to give $10,000 to charity if the rapper would change his name to 79, 89 or 99 Cent.

His lawyer tells us "Taco Bell needs to be stopped" and that "Mr. Cent intends to vigorously pursue this case." Seriously, he referred to him as Mr. Cent.

You know what they say: Mo' money mo' problems. Combined this with his many lawsuits against Shaniqua Tompkins and Fiddy has his legal hands full.

Sexy Hayden Panettiere’s Black Party Dress Most Alluring

Heroes hottie and resident cheerleader Hayden Panettiere got a bit sexier last night in Hollywood, spotted with a rack so sumptuous and (almost) completely satisfying to all straight men worldwide in love with cleavage, they’d now be prepared to die happy. Ms. Panettiere showed up to the event simply for the sake of a certain self-serving, sassy lil’ bitch, otherwise known from Desperate Housewives as Eva Longoria!

SeeEva’s conceited and selfish bitch mentality decided it would be fitting to throw a party in celebration of gracing Allure’s cover. WTF? And surprise! Barely 2 seconds after Eva’s neurons fired that thought, a party was planned & booked at her partially owned restaurant Beso, and unsurprisingly…came brimming with free drugs for all guests! What about the list of celebs who turned up on Eva’s behalf? Not bad, considering this is Eva Longoria we’re discussing here. But somehow, she managed to lure celebrities like Posh Beckham Spice, Heidi Klum, Rosario Dawson, and Saved By The Bell’s Mario Lopez for Tuesday night party time!

Somebody is definitely contributing extra effort to whatever circle jerk agreement they’ve got goin’ here.

For the rest of us non-famous human folk comprising that remaining 99.9% in America’s population can probably agree that Eva’s occasion (scoring Allure) and decisions for throwing this party was definitely the most absurdly conjured up piece of shit idea you’ve heard…ALL YEAR long! It’s first laughable, then somewhat irritating when pondering a gift suitable to present Eva at her Alluring party, if you’d ever find yourself invited–and that gift is a roll of heavy-duty duct tape along with the words STFU printed down each yard!

After bearing your gift, at this point, the surprise is only halfway complete, since you’ve also gotta’ affix (quickly) 3 layers of the new tape snug around the head, and more importantly, tightly adhered to that face hole Eva decorates with makeup (and penis!) If she doesn’t learn new discipline and respect after becoming taped with STFU banners, I’m afraid all hope is vanished for this lady. Might as well go become a Scientologist then, ’cause I guarantee that, eventually, Eva will seek L. Ron Hubbard and Xenu aliens in some kind of mid-life crisis.

Since you probably skipped down to this sentence, click on inside to catch the rest of sexy Hayden and friends posing for hot pics, that you’ll surely appreciate after viewing in 30 seconds!

Awful pun alert: For Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson last night, it wasn't the Calum Best of times.
According to Great Britain's The Sun, the most famous pair of partying lesbians on the planet got into a fight because Lohan was dancing with her ex-boyfriend.

A source said Lindsay "had tears in her eyes as she left" London club Boujis on her own.
Lohan and Best - who once described the Firecrotch Queen as being "dynamite" in bed - dated for several weeks last year. Soon after, Lindsay entered rehab and started having sex with women.
Tough break, Calum.

Benji was overprotective and controlling. He doesn't get along with any of her friends," another insider said. "Friends thought Paris had changed since being with Benji and she wants to be herself again."
In other words: expect an abundance of Paris Hilton nude pics, crotch shots, nights on the town and nauseating reality shows over the next few months. We can't wait.

Michael Jackson: Too Ill to Stand Trial?

And Britney Spears thinks she has it rough.

The odd Michael Jackson may be too sick to travel to London to testify in a suit claiming he owes an Arab sheik $7 million, his attorney said on Tuesday.

MJ is seeking to give his testimony via satellite from the U.S.

"It would be unwise for him to travel, given what's he's got now," lawyer Robert Englehart said, declining to elaborate "for the obvious reasons."

A lawyer for Sheik Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa said the medical evidence presented by the self-proclaimed King of Pop's lawyers is unsatisfactory, saying: "This is not the first time a sick note has been presented by Mr. Jackson."

The lawyer, Bankim Thanki, gave no precise indication of what the illness might be, but told the court that he believed Michael Jackson's condition could be treated with a bandage "if the diagnosis is indeed positive." Ooookay.

Despite all the speculation about his radically changed appearance over the years, he has denied having had any plastic surgery done on his face other than two operations back in the day to help him breathe better to hit higher notes.
